Windows 11 Home vs Pro is one of the first questions people ask when they buy a new computer, and for most households the answer is simple: Home is plenty. Pro adds tools aimed at businesses and IT departments. Here is what each edition does, who should pick which, and how to switch later if you change your mind.
The short answer
For most home users, Windows 11 Home handles everything: web browsing, email, photos, Microsoft Office, video calls and printing. Windows 11 Pro adds security and management features that matter mainly for small offices, remote workers and anyone looking after several computers.
What Home and Pro have in common
Both editions look the same, run the same apps and get the same monthly security updates. Both include Microsoft Defender antivirus, Windows Hello sign-in, the same Start menu and File Explorer. A program that runs on Windows 11 Home will run on Windows 11 Pro.
What Windows 11 Pro adds
- BitLocker encryption with full controls, including encrypting USB and external drives. Home only offers basic device encryption on supported hardware.
- Remote Desktop, so you can sign in to the computer from another PC.
- Business sign-in options, such as joining an office domain or Microsoft Entra ID so an IT provider can manage the machine.
- Group Policy and update controls that let IT set rules and delay feature updates until they are tested.
- Hyper-V and Windows Sandbox for running virtual machines or testing unfamiliar software safely.
- More memory headroom, with support for far more RAM than Home.
Who should choose Windows 11 Home
Home is the right fit for family computers, students, retirees and most home offices. If nobody needs to connect to the computer remotely and no company IT department manages it, you will not miss anything Pro adds.
Who should choose Windows 11 Pro
Pro makes sense for small businesses and for professionals who handle client records, such as law firms, accountants and therapists. It is also worth it if you rely on Remote Desktop or want BitLocker on every drive. If an IT support provider looks after your office, Pro gives them the tools to manage updates and security properly.
How to check which edition you have
Open Settings, choose System, then About. Under Windows specifications, the Edition line shows Home or Pro. You can also press the Windows key, type winver and press Enter.
Can you upgrade from Home to Pro later?
Yes. Go to Settings, System, Activation and choose the option to upgrade your edition of Windows. You can buy the Pro upgrade from the Microsoft Store or enter a Pro product key, and your files and apps stay where they are. Back up first anyway, just in case.
